There has been a huge public backlash to proposals to put the store on the car park of The Ashwood Inn in Wordsley.

People in the area fear the arrival of the store could hit trade at other shops, while there are also concerns about access to the site.

Around 75 people attended Wordsley Community Centre in April to put questions forward about the plan to Co-op bosses.

A poll was taken showing 68 people opposed the scheme and seven were undecided. No one supported the proposals.

They are now due to be presented with answers at a meeting at the centre on Friday at 7pm.

Wordsley councillor Derrick Hemingsley said: "The Co-op has answered 30 questions from residents about their plans and there will be an open meeting where people will be able to hear the answers.

"There was a meeting in April but the Co-op didn't attend, residents were told to ask any questions they had."

The proposals have been submitted by New River Retail, which has revealed similar plans at the sites of several pubs in the West Midlands after brewery Marston's sold off 200 pubs in a £90 million deal.
