Party on! Vow over axed Tettenhall bash

Organisers of a street party that got the axe in Tettenhall today vowed it would go ahead somewhere else in Wolverhampton on the same day.

Will Power said Street Banquet - a foodie festival including gourmet stalls and live music - had already been offered alternative sites for June 27.

It had originally been arranged for the grounds of Chris Jewkes Fitness in Danescourt Road but was scrapped amid fears over parking, litter and noise.

But Mr Power said, after 18 months working on the event, he was determined for it to go ahead at one of the 'several' other Wolverhampton sites he had been offered. For the time being, the options are being kept under wraps.

"Our concept remains the same thing as it always has - to put on a family event that is based around different types of food and drink," he said.

"We are looking at a number of areas, but ideally this side of town.

"We've got a lot of people booked and have made promises to try and raise money for charity on that day.

"We have to book traders quite far in advance because a lot of them are busy. With this cancellation we are losing traders' business as well, it's not just necessarily us."

Councillor Jonathan Yardley, who represents Tettenhall Regis, had expressed concerns about the street party, saying he had been inundated with complaints from Tettenhall residents.

It is the latest event to be cancelled in the village. Last month, Wolverhampton City Council backed down over plans to stage a small funfair on Upper Green following a string of complaints from residents. A petition set up against the fair garnered more than 2,000 signatures in less than 48 hours.
