A gripping shoot-off on saw Ryan take on New Zealand's Michael Johnson in the finals of the IPC Shooting World Cup in Turkey.

Ryan, from Great Barr, suffered a compression fracture of his spine - leaving him paralysed from the chest down after he jumped into a pool at a friend's house in 2006.

Michael took gold on May 15 after shooting 10.7 points to Ryan's 10.4.

And it is not the first time it has been so close between the pair. They have previously gone head-to-head in competitions, which has left Ryan determined to come back stronger next time.

The 24-year-old said: "It was a really tight competition. I was really pleased with my performance during qualifying but on the last day I really surprised myself.

"I did not expect to do as well as I did, I ended up beating my own personal best which was fantastic.

"Playing against Michael is always great. He is the world's bronze medallist after all so it is always a good challenge for me.

"There have been a couple of times before when I could have beaten him and I am looking forward to giving it my best shot at the next World Cup."

July could prove to be a busy time for Ryan as he begins his battle for a place at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.

The determination to achieve the top prize of an Olympic medal at Rio has seen Ryan push himself harder than ever in his training sessions.

He added: "There is no time for me to rest up. All of the competitions are so close together that as soon as I get home I am straight back to training.

"I am competing in the next World Cup in Croatia in July and if I do well in that it is a straight pass to Rio for me.

"If not then I will then be competing in Australia and America. We will just have to see how it goes."
