All lines into and out of Norton Bridge Station, between Stafford and Stone, were closed this afternoon.

The incident, involving a Manchester to Paignton service run by CrossCountry, happened at 3pm - just an hour into its journey to the Devon seaside resort.

All services were immediately suspended and London Midland said its trains between Birmingham and Liverpool were stopped, with services between Euston and Crewe also affected.

CrossCountry spokesman Richard Gibson said: "It's a very unfortunate incident which inevitably had a knock-on effect on the timetable.

"There are very frequent trains on that route with a lot of passengers on board."

Officers from British Transport Police, Staffordshire Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service attended the scene.

Dominic Sutton, of British Transport Police, said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

He said: "Officers are now working to identify the woman and inform her family. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
