Action over eyesore pubs urged by Walsall MP

An MP in Walsall is calling for a meeting over two empty pubs which have fallen into disrepair since closing.

He wants to talk to the council's chief executive or one of his senior colleagues to demand that action is taken over the buildings.

Walsall North Labour MP David Winnick has written to Walsall Council boss Paul Sheehan about the Eagle and the Leathern Bottle, which are both closed but still standing in Cresswell Crescent, Mossley.

In a letter sent this week, he said: "Let me be frank: it is difficult to believe that such dilapidated sites, were they located within areas of the borough with the most expensive properties, would have remained as they have done in this case.

"Hence the strong feeling of residents that the situation is allowed to continue because the location has a high proportion of social housing.

"This may well be considered unfair by the council officials, but it is the impression that exists, and all the more so because the situation has continued for so long; as matters stand, it is likely that there will be no change for some considerable time.

"I think it would therefore be useful if arrangements could be made for yourself or one of your senior colleagues to meet me on the two sites, so there is a better understanding of the deterioration which has occurred, and the constant irritant to residents."
