Taylor, who is affectionately known as Super Bob among the Albion masses, was at Jay's Bar in Graingers Lane to host a question and answer session – and also demonstrated his singing skills by getting up on the karaoke.

The former Baggies striker, whose 131 goals put him eighth on the list of all-time top scorers, was at the bar to support family friend Charlotte Homer's bid to become Miss Black Country 2015.

Around 70 fans snapped up tickets to meet the star, who spoke about his goalscoring exploits during his time at the club.

Fans also wanted to hear his take on the infamous match in 2002 that became known as the Battle of Bramall Lane, when Albion's opponents Sheffield United were left with only six players after goalkeeper Simon Tracey, midfielder Georges Santos and striker Patrick Suffo were sent off and two more United players went off injured, resulting in the game being abandoned.

Charlotte, aged 22, said: "He was great, everyone loved him. He did a talk for half an hour about his time playing.

"They asked him about his best goals and some trouble on the pitch.

"He spent quite a while chatting to fans. He signed some people's stomachs. They loved it."

Taylor surprised a few supporters by doing his best Neil Diamond impersonation on the karaoke, singing one of his favourites, Sweet Caroline.

As part of her duties as a Miss Black Country finalist, Charlotte, of Awbridge Road, Netherton, has been tasked with raising funds for children's charity Beauty with a Purpose.

Around £350 was raised from Sunday's event and not being keen on skydiving or bungee jumping, Charlotte said she was pleased to have a Black Country football legend to call on.

Charlotte, who will find out if she is crowned Miss Black Country on May 24, said: "It was great. I couldn't have done it without him, I'm glad everyone enjoyed it.

"Everyone has to raise money and I am hoping to do some more.

"Bob raffled off some signed T-shirts which helped boost the amount."
