The outdated 50-year-old town centre building is receiving a huge upgrade

with the creation of a 25m pool and a new teaching area, including a boom.

There will also be a much-needed revamp of changing rooms and remodelling of the reception area.

The existing Gala Baths has more than 250,000 visits a year and Walsall Council has drawn up the improvement proposals to encourage more visitors to the Tower Street site. During structural works a closure will be in place from lunchtime May 24 until June 8.

Chris Holliday, head of leisure and community health said: "This is a very exciting stage in this fantastic project.

"Gala Baths is more than 50 years old, but I believe that with this investment, the council will be able to deliver a very noticeable improvement to the centre, bringing some key areas up to modern standards.

"Whilst the nature of the works scheduled for the end of May will require a two-week closure, we will endeavour to keep disruption to a minimum throughout the rest of the project."

It comes as almost £24m is being invested in creating two new leisure centres at Bloxwich and Oak Park.
