Ed Miliband has promised to do 'whatever is necessary' to protect children in the West Midlands from sexual abuse if he becomes Prime Minister.

The Labour leader said a report released by West Midlands Police had to be taken 'incredibly seriously' after it flagged up 'significant similarities' between sex abuse gangs here and those uncovered in Rotherham.

Speaking at a rally of Labour supporters at Polly's Tea Room in Brierley Hill, in what was expected to be his final visit to the Black Country before polling day on Thursday, Mr Miliband said: "We've got to take these issues incredibly seriously.

"And if we get into government we will carry on with the inquiry into child sexual exploitation. You have to do what is necessary, whatever it takes.

"We have big lessons to learn as a society about this and we are absolutely determined to protect our country's children. We will do whatever is necessary to do that."

The police report revealed organised gangs, typically of Asian origin, have been targeting victims at children's homes and schools.

They are also using hotels and parks for 'house parties' to abuse youngsters, often, white girls aged 13 to 16.

The report revealed 210 children or young people were sexually exploited or at risk of sexual exploitation in the region in the first six months of 2014.

But a lack of processes to identify potential victims means there could be many more slipping through the net. Support for stronger action has come from across the political divide.

Conservative candidate Douglas Hansen Luke, standing in Walsall North, said: "This must not be swept under the carpet. These crimes are evil and must be stopped."

Meanwhile, speaking at a rally today, David Cameron will say voters face an 'inescapable choice' this week – by Friday, either he or Ed Miliband will be in Number 10.

He will say: "It's the start of a week when Britain will decide its future. By Friday you'll either have Ed Miliband or me as your Prime Minister.
