Residents living in Northway have set up their own action group after a spate of accidents.

More than 50 people attended a recent public meeting to raise their concerns with members of Dudley Council.

In the latest smash, a parked vehicle was hit by a truck at the foot of the hill in the road leading from Wolverhampton Road on the evening of April 18.

Police say the driver of the truck left the scene and residents contacted officers.

The truck was recovered and a 21-year-old man later attended a police station and is helping with inquiries.

Group spokesman Tony North today said the accidents needed to act as a wake up call. He said he believes it maybe the fifth accident on the same 400 metre section of the road within 12 months.

"Dudley Council has consistently failed to take account of residents' concerns about incidents along Northway generally, which have a common factor such as location or excessive speed," he said.

"It has not put forward a single proposal to improve road safety for the section of the road where this incident occurred, despite repeated requests. This has resulted in the formation of the action group to put forward the residents' case."

Dudley Council's acting strategic director for environment, economy and housing, John Millar, said: "We will, of course, be speaking to police following the incident on Saturday to ensure any concerns are properly addressed in the proposals we draw up.

We have been speaking to Mr North about a range of issues at this location for some considerable time."
