The smash happened outside the Gospel Oak pub, at the junction of Bilston Road and Wednesbury Oak Road, at 5.25pm today.

Crews from Tipton and Wednesbury fire stations also attended the crash between the quad bike and a Vauxhall Astra.

The Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford landed at the nearby Tipton Sports Academy.

He was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Birmingham, having also suffered a fractured leg.

"It is believed he was not wearing a helmet at the time and had suffered a significant head injury which was contributing towards a reduced level of consciousness.

"He was also treated for a fractured leg and was immobilised with the use of a leg splint.

"The doctor administered pain relief before the man was taken to the major trauma centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham by land ambulance.

"The driver of the car, a man, was assessed at scene but was uninjured in the incident.

"Thanks go to the staff of Tipton Sports Academy who voluntarily opened their premises in order to allow the air ambulance to land, meaning the doctor could quickly assist with treating the patient."

Police directed traffic at the scene as fire crews left at around 6.05pm.
