He suffered a serious head injury, a broken leg and injuries to his pelvis and was airlifted to the major trauma centre at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The victim wasn't wearing a helmet and was briefly knocked unconscious following the smash.

The Midlands Air Ambulance landed at the Greenacres School in Lonsdale Road.

West Midlands Ambulance spokesman Murray McGregor said: "When crews arrived they found a man in his early 20s who had been thrown from a quad bike and landed in a garden. The machine was badly damaged as was a nearby wall and lamppost.

"As well as a head injury, the man had suffered a badly broken left leg and a potentially fractured pelvis.

"The man was immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board. In addition his leg and pelvis were splinted.

"He was taken from the scene to the air ambulance which then airlifted him to the major trauma centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for specialist care."
