Slimmers in Alzheimer's charity walk

A group of kind-hearted walkers tackled a nine-mile trek to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society.

The team was led by Terri Whitehouse who has previously walked along the Great Wall of China and the River Nile.

She was joined by eight members of her Weight Watchers group and three friends. They all walked a circular route from Short Heath, Willenhall, through Essington and back.

It took them just over three hours to reach the finish line.

The walk was held after Weight Watchers leader Beverley Longsden's mother Hilary, aged 76, was diagnosed with dementia.

Terri, a retired administrator, said: "We wanted to do this for Beverley as she has been raising money for the charity. Her mum has Alzheimers, so we decided to raise money for charity as well."

The 67 year old walked along the Great Wall of China in 2006. She also drove through the Sahara desert with her son Mark in 2009 for charity.

Terri, who lives in Short Heath, said: "Beverley has so far raised more than £600 for the Alzheimer's Society.

"We are hoping that our walk will take that to over £1,000. The walk went really well."

Beverley Longsden said: "I'd like to thank all my members who did the walk. They lose weight together, are good friends and now they've done this. My mum suffers from dementia, not as bad as it could be.

"She's a fantastic woman. I started raising money a couple of months ago and I've reached £716 already." Beverley runs 13 Weight Watchers groups across Wolverhampton, Willenhall and Bloxwich.

On Saturday, at Wolverhampton Swimming and Fitness Centre, Bentley Bridge, Beverley will be raising even more for the charity by selling homemade cakes and holding an auction. She will be there between 9am and 2pm.
