The long-running South Staffordshire Sailing Club held an open day to encourage new people to take part.

Junior members also organised a six hour sailathon to collect cash towards the RNLI - Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

It saw around a dozen youngsters, aged from eight upwards sail two at a time for an hour and more than £200 was raised.

The club, which dates back 60 years is based at Gailey, just off junction 12 of the M6, and has up to 300 members.

But it organised the open day in an attempt to encourage more people to take up sailing at the waters which cover 65 acres.

Potential new recruits were able to go out with competent sailors in the boats and even try their hand at steering.

More than 80 people attended at the weekend and some have already signed up for a course.

The club has training and sailing throughout the week.

Commador Michael Warbrick said they wanted to get young and old to take part in the activity.

"It went well, it was nice weather and there were lots of new people," he said.

"We have got some people signed up for the learn to sail course.

"It is a fantastic environment to go and sail."

Sailors range from the age of seven to 70 and there is racing and training on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. There is also events held throughout Sundays.

The money raised from the six hour sailing is going towards a good cause.

Funded by charitable donations, the lifeboat crews and lifeguards of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution have saved at least 140,000 lives at sea since 1824.
