At last! Wolverhampton Metro back open again after mine work

It's taken almost four months longer than planned and smashed the budget by £1.7 million - but trams are finally running into Wolverhampton again.

The long-awaited revamp of the Midland Metro in the city centre has been completed.

The job to replace worn-out tram lines and lengthen the platform at St George's stop reached its conclusion on Monday. And after a series of trial runs, the first tram containing passengers for seven months rolled into the city centre yesterday morning without incident.

It marked the conclusion of a job has been besieged with problems from the onset.

The first stumbling block came when no suitable contractor could be found to carry out the work.

Then undetected mine-workings were found under the A41 between The Royal and St George's stops, leading to work halting.

Workers were stationed on site for 24 hours a day to get the job finished.

Councillor Roger Horton, Centro lead member for rail, said the opening of the full service was 'great news'.
