A further £500,000 is to be ploughed into the Walsall Works programme by council bosses.

The scheme offers incentive payments to businesses to train young people in industries such as engineering, manufacturing, construction, health and social care and childcare. It was first launched in 2012.

Regeneration boss, councillor Mohammad Nazir said: "The programme has supported more than 471 apprenticeship starts since the scheme began and this extra source of funding will help us support many more.

"We've made a commitment to support at least a further 135 young people into full apprenticeships, 100 young people through pre-apprenticeships and a further 600 into jobs and training opportunities.

"We have an excellent relationship with our partners and training providers who continue to support our drive and great number of businesses who have put their heart and soul into this scheme.

"Investing in our local residents through the Walsall Works programme will improve Walsall's economic growth and reduce youth unemployment."
