Planning chiefs have recommended that only one of the four sites is approved at the Trucker's Rest cafe in Four Crosses, Cannock.

All the others are earmarked for refusal at tonight's planning committee meeting. There is currently no crematorium in South Staffordshire.

But the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities said of the Four Crosses plan: "The proposed design falls far short of nationally agreed standards and fails to provide many of the basic facilities so essential for providing this sensitive service."

The firm said proposals in Essington and Wergs met recommendations in full.
