His son Malcolm made a live appearance at the Dark Horse in Moseley on the same night with his band The Dough Rollers.

A spokesman for the band said ahead of the gig: "It has obviously been quite a traumatic event for all concerned and it is still a sensitive and private issue but the show must go on and we are very much looking forward to playing in Birmingham."

Fans of the New York blues group had contacted the venue to check whether the performance would still happen. A post on the Dark Horse Facebook page read: "Official word is that despite a sleepless night, the band 'can't wait to get to Brum'. Lets give these New Yorkers a big welcome."

The actor suffered a 'huge' cut on his head but is expected to make a full recovery. The chief instructor of Shropshire Aero Club, which Ford is a lifetime member of, praised his actions. Bob Pooler said: "From the pictures I have seen it looks like he did a good job of landing the aeroplane."
