Last week the Express & Star reported how Wayne Finch from Cheltenham was on a mission to find the relatives of Gunner Thomas Arthur Jevons who played a key role in the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917.

Gunner Jevons was one of 12 men who fought and survived together after the key battle which saw them play an instrumental role in stopping a German counter attack at Little Priel Farm near Ronssoy in France.

He was born in Bilston on December 20, 1891, had a mother called Fanny and a younger sister called Gladys and in the 1901 census his known address is Mount Pleasant in Bilston.

And since the appeal was published in last Wednesday's paper, Express & Star reader David Jones, who is from Wolverhampton, unearthed more information about Gunner Jevons' life.

"It seems that a Thomas Arthur Jevons died in Wolverhampton in 1965," he said.

"The General Record Office (GRO) Index Death Certificate Reference Number is '1965 (4) Wolverhampton 9b 966'. He was aged 74, suggesting he was born in 1891.

"According to the National Probate Index, it is recorded that Thomas Arthur Jevons died on December 15, 1965 at 150 Tettenhall Road, Wolverhampton. He left £4354. Probate was granted in London on January 28 1966 to Gladys May Pearson (a widow) and this would most likely be Thomas' younger sister."

"It is highly likely that Thomas Arthur Jevons never married - I have checked the GRO Marriage Index and have found no record of a marriage. This suggests that he had no children."

And as well as Mr Jones' efforts, the Wolverhampton Archives team uncovered an old Express & Star article - dated in June 1918 - which shows an old image of Gunner Jevons when receiving his Military Medal which was awarded to him following his heroic efforts.

Mr Finch, who is trying to find the relatives of six of the twelve men, said: "Receiving information of this nature is just absolutely fantastic.

"From these details and the picture which was also uncovered we can now get our teeth stuck into it a bit more and hopefully find more information out.

"The appeal is spreading very well with more comments and shares being made. Thank you to everyone who has helped so far."
