The grim discovery was made by a member of the public who alerted RSPCA inspectors to the building in High Oak, Pensnett.

A cord noose had been tied around the neck of the ginger cat and then around the window frame.

RSPCA inspector Vicki Taylor said that the cat would have been alive when he was strung up.

It is not known how long the cat had been there before being found at about 2pm on Friday but it is believed he may have been there for more than 24 hours.

Inspector Taylor today described the attack as a 'deeply distressing incident'.

"There were scratch marks on the wall and the cat's claws were worn down and his pads were bloody so he would have been struggling to free himself for some time," she said.

"You just can't imagine the pain and distress this poor animal went through before he died.

"We need to find those who did this as if they are capable of subjecting an animal to such an ordeal it is worrying to think what else they might do."

Anyone with information about this incident or those responsible should contact the RSPCA on 0300 123 8018.
