A drunken reveller hit a man in the face with a lump of concrete outside a Staffordshire nightclub, a court heard.

Police on duty outside Silks in Cannock spotted Luke Harrison carrying a small piece of concrete in his hand and walk up to the unknown victim.

When Harrison struck the man in the face, officers ran over to him - but he stood there, still holding the concrete, saying 'come on then'.

He was told to put it down and when a taser gun was aimed at him, he dropped the slab and ran off.

He soon gave himself up after a chase, Stafford Crown Court heard at a hearing this week.

Harrison, aged 23, of Pensarn Villas, Wednesbury admitted a charge of affray after the incident on December 14 last year.

Along with a £1,500 fine, he was also ordered to pay £500 costs and a £120 surcharge.

Recorder Mr James Harvey told him: "It is a tragedy to see someone of your background and work record and glowing references in court for what was a drunken but violent offence."

Mr Oliver Woolhouse, defending, said Harrison, a motor trade worker, had suffered a further financial penalty with an order to pay a £2,590 contribution towards his legal aid at the rate of over £500 per month.

He said: "There must have been something that triggered this gross act of stupidity.

"He and his friends had been subject to some physical abuse previously. Had he been sober this would not have happened."

Miss Fiona Cortese, prosecuting, said the man hit by the concrete had not made a statement to the police.

When questioned after his arrest, Harrison said he had been drinking in five pubs and there had been an incident in the nightclub where he ended up on the floor.

He left the club and picked up the concrete to protect himself.

A man came towards him so he hit him in the face and ran off.
