David Lockley had been on a family night out at a social club when the incident occurred, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

Mr Geoffrey Dann, prosecuting, said: "They had had a lot to drink and made their way to the home of one of those he had been with."

Lockley was so argumentative he had to be held down by others when he got there, the court was told.

He then lunged at the young woman, biting her lip so hard that he caused a significant injury, continued Mr Dann.

Police were called and they needed to deploy a Taser to calm him down as he threatened to stab himself with a shard of glass, it was said.

He can remember nothing of what happened, revealed Miss Blondelle Thompson, defending. She said: "He is thoroughly ashamed of himself and has given up alcohol. He hopes to turn his life around."

Lockley from Cromwell Road, Bushbury, whose previous convictions included offences of affray and assaulting police, pleaded guilty to assault and was sent to prison for 26 weeks.

Recorder Stephen Thomas told him: "You became fighting drunk while out drinking with members of your family. This is not an unusual condition for you as your previous offending."
