Suspected hit and run driver arrested after pedestrian suffers broken leg
A suspected hit and run driver has been arrested following a collision this morning that left a pedestrian with a broken leg.
After the collision the driver of the car sped off, but a quick-thinking driver noted down its details and passed them to police call handlers.
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) meant that 20 minutes later a man was arrested at an address in Lichfield.
The 33-year-old has been taken to a Birmingham police station where he will be questioned on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of the collision just after 6am, when a man in his 50s was struck in Kingsbury Road, Castle Vale.
A Ford C-Max with front end damage has been seized by police for forensic analysis.
West Midlands Police Force incident manager, Chief Inspector Simon Williams, said: "An alert motorist witnessed the collision and provided a registration number…it later proved to be one letter out but was sufficient for us to run checks and get patrol teams and camera operators on the lookout.
"A car with a similar plate 'pinged' an ANPR camera and we were then able to trace it to an address near Lichfield. We had the suspect in custody just 30 minutes after the collision."
The injured man suffered a badly broken leg and has been taken to hospital.
