No one was injured in the blaze. One lane was blocked and traffic was diverted towards Sedgley after the incident at around 9.30am.

Firefighters armed with hose-reel jets tended to the fire. The road towards Wombourne remained closed until mid-morning while police arranged the recovery of the vehicle.

West Midlands Fire Control spokesman Matthew Smith, said: "We arrived on the scene at 9.39am and found a large vehicle had been totally destroyed by fire on the roadway.

"It appears that a private ambulance had suffered a fault to its engine. No people were trapped or injured in the incident."
