Fire crews were called to the camp off Lyne Hill Lane close to the A449 Stafford Road, in Penkridge, shortly before 10.50am yesterday.

Crews from Penkridge and Cannock found the caravan and piles of rubbish ablaze near a railway line.

The firefighters used two hose reel jets to put out the flames.

Faye Casey, spokesman for Staffordshire Police, said: "Patrols attended and the fire service has confirmed that it was of deliberate ignition.

"It involved an old caravan and no other damage.

"The matter is being referred to the Environment Agency concerning the burning of rubbish."

The fire will also be discussed at a meeting of Penkridge Parish Council tonight.
