VIDEO diary: Staffordshire police officer shot in face has eye removed
A police officer who was shot twice in the face while on duty in Staffordshire has now had his eye removed and has posted an online video about his road to recovery.
Sergeant Jon King was left blind in one eye as a result of the shooting while he was on duty in Rugeley.
The 48-year-old, who has 26 years' service with the force, was shot twice in the face at close range after he and his colleagues were called to help paramedics at a property in Wat Tyler Close on October 19 last year.
A 34-year-old man was later detained at the scene under the Mental Health Act and taken to a psychiatric unit for treatment.
In his latest video diary entry posted on YouTube, he said he had recently had surgery on his eye to have it removed and was taking further steps towards getting a prosthetic eye.
Surgeons have taken his right eye out and put a plastic insert in, attaching it to muscles in the back of his eye socket.
On the video Sgt King, who lives in Cannock, said: "I've got a little bit of movement, which I'm happy with.
"And then on February 13, just in time for Valentine's Day, I'm going to be having a temporary cover done."
The father-of-four added: "They will fit me up for something that is the same colour as my other eye, just temporary whilst I have a proper fitting for this eye and it hand painted, which I think is going to take a couple of months."
After the shooting last October, he was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and was transferred to Birmingham Midland Eye Centre the following morning.
He had surgery on his eye and spent around a week on bed rest.
His latest video has already been viewed hundreds of times.
Sgt King was the second serving police officer in his family to be shot – his brother Geoff King was hit while working in Wolverhampton back in 2006.
The Pc was opened fire on while on a path off the Penn Road after being approached during police checks following a spate of car thefts.
He was shot twice and lost six and a half pints of blood.
Doctors said he was within two minutes of dying.
