Nine injured in crashes on M6 and M42

Nine people were hurt in two motorway crashes in the West Midlands this afternoon.

Four people were hurt in a crash on the M6. Two cars collided on the northbound carriageway between junction 10 for Wolverhampton and Walsall and 10a for the M54.

The accident, which happened just after 1pm, forced the closure of the motorway while the scene was cleared.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said all four suffered minor injuries were treated at the scene and discharged.

The motorway was back to normal by 2.40pm.

At 1.55pm, a crash on the M42 injured five people including an eight year old boy.

The accident happened near Junction 6, close to the NEC.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Crews arrived to find three vehicles that had been in a serious collision. A team of army medics had stopped to assist the patients whilst the ambulance crews were on route.

"An eight year old boy who was travelling in one car suffered abdominal injuries and received emergency treatment at the scene. He was transferred by land ambulance to Birmingham Children's Hospital for further treatment.

"Two women travelling in the same car both suffered minor injuries and received treatment at the scene. One woman, believed to be in her 20's was transferred by ambulance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with the second woman, believed to be in her 40's, transferred to Heartlands Hospital.

"A man and a woman both believed to be in their 50's, and travelling in the second vehicle, both suffered minor injuries and received treatment at the scene. Both were transferred in the same ambulance to Heartlands hospital.

"No one from the third vehicle was injured.

"Considering the substantial damage to the vehicles involved, the occupants were fortunate not to have suffered more serious or even fatal injuries."
