Wolverhampton bids goodbye to the city's favourite son Sir Jack Hayward
Wolverhampton was today saying goodbye to its favourite son, Sir Jack Hayward.
The funeral of the legendary former Wolves owner, who died last month aged 91, was taking place at St Peter's Collegiate Church. The 671 Squadron Army Air Corps, the regiment with which Sir Jack served, was also conducting a flypast with a military Lynx helicopter.
Thousands of fans from around the country were expected to turn out to pay their respects.
And a floral replica of Molineux was created in a stunning tribute to the great man. Members of Molineux Mix commissioned the tribute from Buds of Tettenhall florist Paul Mincher, who also made a floral Spitfire model shortly after Sir Jack died.
More than £400 was raised by members to pay for the floral Molineux, with cash left over donated to a charity that Sir Jack supported. It was due to be at St Peter's Church today, after being on display at Molineux for the past week.
Mr Mincher said it had taken him about 25 hours to build the model, which is made out of gypsophila and various grasses. He added:
"It has been an honour to work on this for Sir Jack."
On the model pitch the words 'Glad you helped' and 'Thank you' can be seen, a nod to Sir Jack's modest comment in the Molineux visitor's book he was 'glad to have helped'. Weather permitting, the helicopter was flying over Molineux at 1.30pm ahead of the funeral at 2pm.
