WATCH: Manhole cover explodes narrowly missing child

A child and two adults had a lucky escape after a manhole cover they were walking past exploded out of the ground.

The blast is believed to have been caused by a build-up of gas and happened at around 12.20pm this afternoon.

The incident left a one metre deep hole in the pavement in Warwick Road, Birmingham, and is currently being investigated by West Midlands Fire Service.

Utility companies, including gas and electrical teams, have been called to the scene and a cordon has been established around the site while the investigations take place.

According to witnesses, smoke was seen coming from a junction box near the manhole which had become dislodged.

No injuries were reported.
