A British Transport Police spokeswoman said they were called to Penkridge Station about 8.30pm after reports a person had been struck by a train.

West Midlands Ambulance and Staffordshire Police were also in attendance.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and officers are currently working to identify them.

Claire Brown, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman, said: "Sadly, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save the woman and she was confirmed dead on scene.

"A second person, who witnessed the incident, was treated for the effects of severe shock before being taken to County Hospital in Stafford for further treatment."

The death is not being treated as suspicious.
