The burglary happened in Cardoness Place at around 12.20pm when a man broke into a house and confronted the mother and child before stealing a Blackberry phone and bag.

Dwayne Blackstock, 26, from Cradley Heath, was later arrested and charged with four attempted burglaries and one burglary in connection with the incident.

He appeared before Dudley Magistrates Court yesterday where he was remanded into custody until February 7, when he will appear at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

Police in Dudley are now asking people living near Cardoness Place to check their gardens for help in tracing stolen goods believed to have been dropped following the break-in. The items taken include a white Blackberry, a purple mobile phone, a black canvas bag and a pair of children's pyjama bottoms.

DCI Richard Jones from Dudley Police said: "Whilst these incidents are rare I would urge residents to secure their properties both when they are at home and when they are out, so opportunist offenders don't take advantage.

"Enquiries are on-going but it is believed the woman's bag and phone and other property was discarded in gardens nearby. This may be vital evidence and I would ask for anyone who finds property in gardens to contact officers on 101."
