Time for me to go: Leader of Stafford Borough Council
The leader of Stafford Borough Council is standing down.
Councillor Mike Heenan will resign as leader on January 20, but will continue to represent the ward of Weeping Cross. However, he will not stand in the May elections – quitting the council after almost 40 years.
"This decision is a personal one which I have been contemplating for some time," he said. "I was first elected to the council some 39 years ago and I now want to have more time to enjoy my retirement and other activities.
"I have enjoyed my time as a councillor and wish to thank the members and officers of the council for all their support."
The council's Conservative group is now discussing who should replace Councillor Heenan as leader.
The CPS is still looking into allegations from last year that he committed a crime by failing to declare the full extent of his financial interests.
