Leon Patterson-Docherty started the tantrum by throwing things around the house, explained Mr Paul Spratt, prosecuting.

Then the 19-year-old defendant picked up a large carving knife and used it to twice slash the wheelchair before storming from the address, it was said.

He had been allowed to return to the family home - where his mother was recovering from a broken ankle - after earlier problems, continued Mr Spratt.

The trouble started on October 17 when Patterson-Docherty discovered his tea had not been prepared, the court heard.

Mr David Iles defending, conceded: "He lost his temper in difficult circumstances and went too far."

Patterson-Docherty of Elmhurst Court, Darlaston admitted criminal damage and common assault and was given a 12 month community order under supervision with 175 hours unpaid work.

Recorder Stephen Thomas told him: "You wielded a knife in circumstances that must have been terrifying to your mother. You not only wielded the knife but you used it to cause damage. People who do that often get sent straight to prison.
