The two officers are today recovering in hospital after they were hit by two by two cars on Dudley Port - A461 - in Tipton.

At around 1.30am this morning the officers from Old Hill police station, were speaking to a driver opposite the railway station when a Blue VW Golf GTi ploughed into the back of the stopped car.

The force of the crash shunted the car into the officers before the Golf hit them throwing them into the air.

An officer, in his 40s, who has served with the force for 11 years was knocked unconscious and sustained a broken leg.

His colleague, also in his 40s and who has served with West Midlands Police for 13 years, suffered serious fractures to both legs.

Both were taken to hospital with serious injuries where they remain in a stable condition.

Debris from the collision

The driver of the Golf was trapped in her car. Having been cut free by firefighters the 37-year-old from the Dudley Port area of Tipton was taken to hospital with a suspected broken shoulder.

Chief Inspector Jack Hadley, from West Midlands Police, said: "Despite their serious injuries, this crash could have been much worse for all concerned.

"The officers were initially treated by colleagues before firearms officers - who have advanced life-saving skills - arrived to provide major trauma care.

"Paramedics then took over sending three ambulances and three doctors to the scene.

"I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken to police to get in touch."

The driver of the car stopped by officers was not seriously injured.

Dudley Port was closed for four hours while emergency services responded to the crash.

Anyone with information which may aid the on-going police investigation should call the Collision Investigation Unit on 101.
