David Dean is accused of attacking a staff member at Atwal Wines, Bilston Road, on Sunday night and leaving him with multiple stab injuries.

Dean, 42, of Holloway Street, was arrested by West Midlands Police and has been charged with trying to kill the 51-year-old.

He is set to appear before Wolverhampton Magistrates Court on Boxing Day.

The staff member was treated at the scene and taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition, although his injuries are not deemed life threatening.

Joginder Ledher, the 54-year-old co owner of the shop said: "He has worked here for over ten years under four different owners. We wish him well. He is a dear friend.

"When these things happen you just have to carry on as normal. You cannot walk in fear or else they win."

Inspector Phil Asquith, from the Wolverhampton Violent Crime Team, said: "We have arrested a local man and continue to appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time of the attack to come forward.

"If you witnessed anything then please call me or one of my team with information. The shopkeeper remains in hospital and continues to be treated for his injuries."
