Transport firm National Express West Midlands is bringing in the price rises.
An adult single has gone up by 10p with returns going up 20p or 30p, depending on how far people are travelling, meaning the most expensive return fare will be £6.
Weekly and monthly passes have also gone up with a four-week Metrocard now costing £65.50, up £2.
A statement on the Midland Metro website said: "Fare increases have been kept to a minimum and West Midlands' bus and tram travel continues to offer great value when compared to the cost of driving and parking in the region's cities."
Commuters are also being hit in the pocket by bus fare increases which were announced earlier this month.
Those charges, which also start in January, will see an adult single rise from £2.10 to £2.20.
A £4.5million project to replace tracks and extend platforms in Wolverhampton which was due to finish last month has still not been completed.
