Appeal after lifeline scooter lost in blaze
A fire which ripped through a garage in Walsall has wrecked a mobility scooter which is a vital lifeline for a great-grandmother.
The scooter which is used by 86 year-old Glenys Rich to get around to meet friends and attend appointments was badly damaged in the blaze.
An appeal has been launched for anyone who can help towards getting a replacement to ensure she does not have to remain housebound.
It happened in Cherrywood Road, Streetly, at around lunchtime on Thursday and is believed to have been sparked by a tumble dryer.
Other items such as table, garden furniture and dryer itself were wrecked in the blaze but insurance means the cost will be covered. However, the scooter is not covered and means they will need to foot the bill for a new one.
Grandson Jamie Rich who lives with his grandmother said she relies on the equipment to go out around three times a week.
She was in at the time of the blaze but was alerted by a smoke alarm. A neighbour also came round to assure she was able to leave the address unharmed and was not in any immediate danger.
The chef, aged 27, said: "It is not always possible for me to ferry my nan about, because she can't get out the house without the mobility scooter she is very restricted.
"She goes out maybe three times a week with it, she can't go on the bus.
"It has been pretty devastating, it is a massive stumbling block for us, there is a lot to sort out especially this time of year."
The fire caused smoke-logging to the semi-detached home but firefighters managed to prevent flames from spreading elsewhere, and took around 15 minutes to control.
Two firefighters in breathing apparatus helped to deal with the fire and spent around two hours at the scene.
