The 22-year-old was taken to hospital where his condition is described as stable. Five other people in the house on Turton Road, including a young baby, were unhurt.

The three men, described as black Afro-Carribean and wearing balaclavas, demanded money, but made off empty handed around 8pm.

A police cordon is in place at the property while forensic investigators examine the scene and officers are conducting house to house enquiries and trawling CCTV in the area.

Detective Sergeant Adam Austin is leading the investigation. He said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for the family and we urgently need to track down the men responsible. Fortunately the victim is expected to make a full recovery.

"I would urge anyone with information to contact me as soon as possible."

Anyone with information can contact DS Austin on 101 or information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
