St John's C of E Primary School in Wednesbury has joined several other schools in the area to become part of St Chad's Academy Trust.

The school has officially changed its status and is now known as St John's C of E Primary Academy.

The school claims it will allow them greater freedom over the curriculum and in other areas.

Principal Sarah Cockshott said: "We will have more financial control and we can get the best value for money in a lot of areas as an academy. We can shop around.

"We have more freedom with the curriculum and we can be more creative with what we teach and how we teach it.

"The uniform is different but it is not a different school, it is the start of a new chapter in the school's life.

"We pride ourselves on being a family, our slogan is 'believe to achieve' and that will remain. I want St John's to be the hub of the community.

"We have asked parents and stakeholders about every aspect of the change each step of the way. Pupils and parents had a vote on everything and we tried to listen very carefully to every suggestion.

"We are very excited about this change and what it will mean for the staff, the pupils and parents. The future is very bright," she said.

As an academy the school is associated with St Chad's Academy Trust, run by the Diocese of Lichfield. The trust will provide support which in the past has come from Sandwell Council.

School governor Father Roger Gilbert said: "I want to congratulate the staff at the school for how they have dealt with the academy change.

"It is clear that staff have worked well with the children so that they understand the changes and the transition is smooth. The children are not left guessing what becoming an academy means and are embracing and enjoying this change.

"It is a partnership involving the children, teachers, governors and parents which in turn will bring a bright future.

"What is truly striking about the school is the children love coming here and they have trust in the teachers which aids their learning.

"This is not saying goodbye to Sandwell as we appreciate all the support they have provided, it is more a new chapter in the school's life.

"I am greatly excited about the change."
