Western Power Distribution has revealed the recruitment drive as part of its launching its new 2015 apprenticeship campaign.

A range of jobs will be on offer to trainee in the scheme including joiners and fitters which will see recruits based at locations across the Midlands.

The company admitted that many of the apprentices would come as existing staff retire under the scheme.

Around 30 are expected to take up roles in the West Midlands, according to bosses today.

Company spokesman, Liz Kelly, said: "We're looking to recruit around 100 technical apprentices in total across our region, including over thirty in the West Midlands, as part of our core strategy to bring in fresh talent and to maintain a skilled workforce as existing staff retire."

Western Power Distribution owns and operates the electricity distribution network, providing power to homes and businesses across the Midlands, south west England and south Wales employing more than 6,000 staff.

It deals with a range of issues including repairs during power cuts.

One of the company dedicated training facilities is based in Tipton where the majority of operational and technical training takes place.

The centre, in Toll End Road, often provides external training for other electricity companies.

Apprenticeships take two to three years to complete and include formal in-house training in Tipton.

There will also be opportunities for on-the-job training at a nearby depot.

Miss Kelly added: "The skills that we provide our apprentices are high value and unique to our industry.

"Apprentices can look forward to a challenging, rewarding and secure career in an industry-leading company."

The company is taking applications until mid-January. For details visit www.westernpower.co.uk/careers

It comes as other companies have also revealed a recruitment drive to boost staffing levels in recent weeks.

Parcel delivery company Yodel, which has a main sorting centre on the Willenhall/Darlaston border, has created the seasonal roles, which include warehouse staff and drivers.

Bosses say they have already filled 450 vacancies and were looking for an additional 150 sorting staff for its centre in Owen Road.

Housebuilder Persimmon is also recruiting in the West Midlands and has announced plans to bring ex-military personnel in to help fight the skills shortage in the construction industry.
