Teenage cyclist airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries after Lichfield crash

A teenage cyclist was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a crash involving a minibus in Lichfield.

The 16-year-old boy was thrown 20ft from his bicycle near to The Anchor pub on the A5127 Burton Road in Streethay shortly before 7.40am this morning.

The incident happened on the pelican crossing near to Meadow Croft and involved a white Vauxhall Vivaro taxi.

Jamie Arrowsmith, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "On arrival, crews discovered a male teenager who had reportedly been thrown approximately 20ft from his bicycle following a collision with a minibus.

"Following assessment from crews, the patient, who was suffering from a reduced level of consciousness, was treated for a significant head injury, anaesthetised and airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham."

His injuries are thought to be life threatening. The 36-year-old male driver of the minibus was uninjured.

The road was closed for three hours whilst specialist officers examined the scene.

Staffordshire Police are now appealing for witnesses and a detailed investigation is now underway.
