Emergency services were called to the A491 in Kingswinford near the A449 island at around 5pm this evening.

A British Gas van travelling towards Kingswinford was involved in a collision with a Seat Ibiza travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the van was treated at the scene for chest injuries and taken to hospital for further checks. The driver of the car was breathalysed at the scene, while his female passenger was removed from the car on a stretcher.

They were also taken to hospital for further treatment.

The A491 was closed between the junction at Stallings Lane and the A449 island while fire crews removed debris from the road. The road block led to long delays for motorists travelling in both directions.

Watch Commander Mick Clark, from Brierley Hill Fire Station, said: "This was a head-on crash which could have had disastrous consequences.

"You can see by the state of the vehicles involved how bad it was. Thank goodness there weren't children in either vehicle or we could be dealing with something far worse."
