New £50k Wolverhampton traffic lights switched off after failing
Council bosses have apologised after traffic lights which cost £50,000 to install failed, causing delays in Wolverhampton city centre.
Lights on Bilston Island were stuck on red this morning, and then switched off entirely while being repaired.
Traffic backed up on the ring road around the city centre during Monday morning's rush hour.
The lights were installed at the weekend in a project which took 25 days to complete, part of a string of roadwork schemes which have caused delays for motorists in the past few weeks and months.
Wolverhampton City Council spokesman Tim Clark said: "Contractors installed a new controller unit for the lights at Bilston Street Island over the weekend.
"It appears that there was a fault with the new controller this morning that meant that lights were stuck on red for a short period.
"The fault caused some congestion and we apologise for any inconvenience."
