Fire crews from Penkridge, Cannock and Brewood tackled the blaze at a house near The Corner Shop at Gailey Island.

They were called out at around 5am today.

They used ladders to rescue two people from the first floor of the building along the A5. An elderly man was treated at the scene by ambulance crews for smoke inhalation.

The fire did not spread to the adjacent building which operates as a canal shop in the summer months.
