Petition to save Walsall library attracts 1,500 signatures
Almost 1,500 people have now backed a campaign against plans to close a library in Walsall.
A protest petition has been launched against the move to shut Pheasey Library.
It is is among a number of sites earmarked across the borough for closure by the council as chiefs look to save £86 million due to budget cutbacks.
The facility is based at Collingwood Centre, in Collingwood Drive, and is run with the help of volunteers from the community.
Under the town hall's draft budget it, along with four other libraries, will shut next year, including Streetly, Beechdale, South Walsall in Delves, and Walsall Wood.
Three others in Blakenall, New Invention and Rushall will close the following year. The move will save the authority £565,722 to £385,092 in 2015/2016 and £180,630 in 2016/2017 if it goes ahead.
Pheasey ward representative Councillor Adrian Andrew said: "We have got nearly 1,500 signatures. We really want people to push the boat out to lift that figure. We're planning to present the petition at a future meeting of the cabinet committee."
