Council chiefs have rubber stamped the plans, which will see a new crossing over the A449 Penn Road between the junctions with Buttons Farm Road and Springhill Lane.

Residents had requested a crossing on the section of road, which has been the scene of a number of traffic accidents in recent years.

Penn Councillor Paul Singh, said the news was a great relief to people in the area.

"Road safety is a major issue for residents and everyone is pleased at the news," he said.

"Crossing from the Buttons Farm side to the shops on the other side of the road has always caused problems. Over the years there have been accidents and people will certainly feel a lot safer when the crossing is in place."

Following a public consultation, Wolverhampton City Council confirmed the work will take place before the end of the current financial year in April.
