A total of 2,000 people have signed a petition against parking charges in Willenhall.

The petition was handed in to Walsall Council by Councillor Mohammad Nazir, Mayor of Walsall.

Pay and display parking is set to be brought in at Gomer Street, Hall Street and Wolverhampton Street next year as part of a bid to rake in £100,000.

The move will also see free car parks in Aldridge, Bloxwich, Brownhills and Darlaston introduce charges for the first time.

Businesses in the town have said the introduction of charges could turn away potential customers and leave them struggling to compete with shops in other areas.

The cash strapped council needs to save £86 million from its budget over the next four years.

A total of £29 million in savings is planned for next year, with 487 jobs set to be axed.
