Work to replace the joints at Bescot Viaduct that carries the motorway over the River Tame will start on Monday.

The southbound carriageway will be closed between junction 10 at Walsall and junction eight at the M5 link each night from 10pm to 6am.

The entry slip roads at junctions 10 and 9 at Wednesbury will also be closed to traffic.

Highways Agency project manager Jessica Kenny said: "Bridge joints contract and expand with the weather or weight of traffic and make sure the bridge does not deteriorate. Renewing them will ensure the continued safety of the viaduct.

"To carry it out safely and efficiently we need to close the motorway. While the motorway is closed however, we will take the opportunity to resurface all three lanes and the hard shoulder. This will avoid the need for further disruption to road users in the future."

Southbound traffic and traffic intending to join the M6 southbound at junction 10 will be diverted via the A454, the A4148 Walsall Ring Road and the A34 to join the M6 at junction 7 at Great Barr.

Southbound traffic will be diverted from junction 9 to the A461 and the A4148.
