A community speed watch project organised to combat the problem in Wordsley caught 55 speeding drivers speeding in just two hours.

Councillor Derrick Hemingsley said he set up the initiative to make the roads safer for school children in the area. It was focused around Belle Vue Primary, Ashwood Park Primary and Dingle Community Primary Schools.

The scheme found that 46 drivers were caught driving 35 mph in a 30 mph area.

Seven motorists were doing 40 mph and two were driving at 46 mph.

Councillor Heminglsey said: "My main concern first and foremost is the safety of children in the area who have to walk to school while there are speeding cars going around.

"I'm a governor at Belle Vue Primary School and it is my duty is for the wellbeing of the pupils.

"We set up the speedwatch and only noted those that went above 33 mph and still there more than 50 who broke that in just two hours.

"That is too many drivers.

"Signage and road markings are just being ignored and it is of a concern and we know only too well with a recent death the dangers of the streets.

"I'm an elected member of Dudley Council for Wordsley and as a community spokesman this issue needs to be raised."

Councillor Heminglsey said the solution is not as simple as handing out speeding tickets.

He added: "I'm against going all Big Brother and fining people left, right and centre for speeding because I don't think that is the answer.

"What needs to be done is getting the message across to people who are speeding that; one it is dangerous and two there are children around in the community whose lives they are putting at risk.

"If we can make that loud and clear and prevent a tragic accident then our job is done."

A similar scheme is due to take place outside of Ashwood Park Primary School in the coming weeks.

In July more 40 drivers were found to be speeding outside of the school.
