More roadworks misery for Wolverhampton drivers

Drivers in Wolverhampton face more misery with yet another set of roadworks along a section of road that was dug up for five months longer than it should have been.

Wolverhampton City Council has broken the news to traders along Bridgnorth Road in Compton, outside the entrance to the Oddfellows Pub.

The road will be dug up for a week to 10 days from October 25, over half term, to deal with 'severe storm water flooding' and the risk of a collapse

It comes a year after the end of heavily delayed work done by Severn Trent to repair the water pipe on Compton Bridge.

Conservative councillor Andrew Wynne said: "Residents and shopkeepers will be most concerned about the inconvenience, especially after the prolonged road closure due to Severn Trent work.

"The closure of such an important main road, even for a short time, will cause huge problems and difficulties."

Wolverhampton City Council said flooding was caused by three blocked gullies.

But it said it was not possible to clear them by high pressure jetting. Further investigations have indicated that the gully connections to the main sewer in Bridgnorth Road may have collapsed leading to a depression forming in the centre of the road.

Bridgnorth Road will be shut to vehicles between Henwood Road and Finchfield Hill. Vehicle access to canalside businesses will be maintained from Compton Road only, and pedestrian access will be maintained to all businesses throughout the work.

Council spokesman Tim Clark said: "The timing of this is regrettable, but unavoidable. We know that businesses, residents and commuters in Compton have only recently endured considerable disruption through the Severn Trent bridge works. We can only apologise that these works will cause more issues for people, but we hope they understand that we've had to act swiftly to prevent a void we've discovered in the road potentially getting worse and causing the carriageway to collapse. We will be doing these works over the half term holiday to try and keep disruption to a minimum and access to canalside businesses will be maintained via Compton Road."
