Window cleaner Shaun Bayliss said he was stabbed a total of five times in the back and the chest.

A jury at Stafford Crown Court heard that the violence erupted on May 24 this year, starting at the Pear and Partridge pub before moving on to the car park of the Wrottesly Arms.

Mr Bayliss named the knifeman as 'Rocky', the nickname of defendant Liam Phipps, who denies attempting to kill him outside the Wrottesley Arms.

Phipps, aged 21, of High Street, Tettenhall, also denies an alternative charge of wounding Mr Bayliss with intent to do him grievous bodily harm..

Giving evidence, Mr Bayliss said he had gone to the Wrottesley Arms to meet up with some friends when his friend, Joey Padley came running down an alleyway with his nose bleeding.

Joey said he had been punched by a man called Mitch, the nickname of Phipps's cousin, Kamal Lodge.

Another of Joey's friends, Alex Bennett, phoned Mitch to find out what had happened.

Mr Bayliss told the jury: "Within three to five minutes, Mitch actually came down this alley with a kitchen knife asking where Alex was.

"He was actually flashing the blade to us. I backed away to the side of the car park. Alex was talking to Mitch while he was trying to get at him, this went on for three or four minutes.

"He ended up in Severn Drive where he actually dropped the knife and punched my friend in the jaw.

"I actually came running at the group of people and I remember punching Mitch in the left eye and he fell on the floor as well.

"At this time I was stood over Mitch when I felt something in my back. I turned round. I believe it was Rocky, stood there with a knife.

"I remember being stabbed once in the front and I proceeded to defend myself with my fists, this all happened so quick.

"I remember putting my hand by my heart. I thought I had been stabbed in my heart so I left the area."

In cross examination, Miss Narita Bahra, defending, put to Mr Bayliss that it was Lodge and not Phipps who did the stabbing:

Mr Bayliss said: "I don't accept that."
